To avoid inconsistencies in future years, take notes from your root digs. Ensure soil conditions are optimal for planting, avoid "mudding in" the crop, and ensure you have proper down pressure on your planter and closing wheels are correct for your soils.

Random digs into the row before emergence show us whether we made good seed-to-soil contact, avoided air pockets, and selected quality seed. We want to see that the seed gets off to a good start, which helps establish stand uniformity, begins to establish an effective root system, and sets the stage for potential yields.
