WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM AG SPECTRUM REPRESENTATIVES AND SCIENTISTS VISITING YOUR FARM DURING THE GROWING SEASON?

“So when these people show up to go look, let’s grab a spade and go walk around and see something. We start digging up roots. Here’s what you see. This is too shallow, that looks good . . . Then you get into these roots are good because of this and that … But the point is your soil health. You work on soil health. These products help with this. These practices help with that. You get bigger roots, you get bigger corn stalks, you get bigger plants, you get bigger yields!”

WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM MAXIMUM FARMING SERVICE CHECKS?

“I think our success on this is coming from our Dealers and the information they bring; the answered questions. The biggest thing was, we had a question and there was an answer for it. A lot of local people don’t spend much time looking in our fields, even before you buy something, and have actual answers. It’s more like, well it could be this or could be that. let me call someone and ask. It is a lot neater when the person sitting there says here is what’s going on … Here is what I see and this is what causes it.”

WHAT DO YOU LEARN FROM SERVICE CHECKS DURING THE GROWING SEASON?

You get to walk through the field, we assess not just the plants. We assess fertility. We assess soil conditions and soil quality.  It seems most commonly when a seed salesman or a fertilizer dealer comes out, we focus on that product, that seed, that fertilizer. With the Ag Spectrum Maximum Farming System, we look at all the facets of what it takes to nurture that crop. I think they all work together. It is a system. Understanding what the soil is doing to release the nitrogen, what the P and K are doing to react with those roots, what do the roots look like. The whole system brings it all full circle.  It is very tough to get in touch with an input supplier that is focused on all of those products.  They are mostly focused on what is that plant look like, what is the nitrogen program?  It is the system view that is valuable to me!”

WHAT ELSE DO YOU LEARN?

“What I think I learn is a fresh set of eyes. Anybody who comes and observes a crop on your farm is someone who has not been there in a couple of weeks. We, as farmers, get a blind eye to what we are looking at. A fresh perspective from anyone is valuable! Folks who are on the Ag Spectrum system, I believe, are keenly aware of agronomy and plant physiology. So when we get to see you guys, we get a true assessment about the finite details of that crop production and that is neat to see.”

WHY BETTER?

“Crosier told us that he does not use any P & K on his home ground. Some of the contracts for his rented ground specify the application and rates of P & K. He explained that landlords who do not understand the Maximum Farming System often require minimum amounts of P & K application of about 60 and 60, and one rented farm landlord requires 100 and 100 to be used.

From 1996 until the present, Crosier has tracked his soil tests and yield results by GPS and management zones. For more than 20 years samples have been sent to Midwest Labs, which provides more consistent and usable data by using the same methodology during that time. While soil test numbers are merely an indication of soil condition, Crosier’s numbers continue to improve, then stabilize during drought years, and improve again.”

RESULTS

“It is rare that you get to have an organization that you can go to and trust what they tell you and learn so much. We have been extremely fortunate to be involved with Ag Spectrum. It has changed a lot of things in our dairy operation. It has made a huge difference. We can’t thank them enough. It’s been fabulous!”

ADVANTAGES OF THE MAXIMUM FARMING SYSTEM

“Agility, our ability to make decisions more real time . . . If you are putting the fertility on with the planter, that gives me flexibility to go to another crop, if conditions don’t allow … The Maximum Farming System really gave us a better start in more adverse conditions versus the conventional approach. We had the fertility right there where the plant wanted it.”

WHAT ABOUT THE MAXIMUM FARMING SYSTEM MAKES SENSE?

“I think that fertilizer use efficiency is. Part of it is regulation. Part of it is just wanting to do a better job, to be a better steward of the environment and that’s kind of what brought me to Ag Spectrum. To get more out of less, or more out of the same fertility program.”

“I didn’t know that I needed to do things differently; but I now look at specifics beyond N, P & K.” It’s the prescriptive approach to the changes adopted in his farming system, along with the educational emphasis, that attracted Johnson to the System originally.

“We need to listen to what the soil is telling us. When the soil test comes back, we sit down with farmers and show them where they have a deficiency and where they have a surplus, nutrient-wise. We say, you need to spend your money here and not here to balance your soils. That’s when customers can start to spend fewer input dollars and use them more wisely.”

RICH MALCOM
AG SPECTRUM AREA MANAGER

“The goal of my work, simply stated, is to promote good agricultural stewardship. That means supporting the sustainable growth of diverse crops, the land on which they grow, and the people that manage them both with science-based recommendations. Those long familiar with our company know that is what the Maximum Farming System is all about.

Good stewardship requires one to understand how to optimally use inputs. Successful farmers are good stewards who apply fertilizers, manures, and pesticides in a manner that maximize their efficacy and minimize their losses and non-target effects. They know that lost inputs equate to wasted input dollars. But, how can one achieve maximal input efficienceis when weather can be so unpredictable? At Ag Spectrum, we promote a complete systems approach to making input decisions that promote good environmental stewardship while maximizing farm profits. The Maximum Farming System uses the 5R’s of fertilization to help farmers make optimal use of their inputs, continually improve soil and plant health, and thus reduce the temptation to unprofitably overapply or misapply inputs. By doing so, our customers learn how to be better stewards of the land, air, and water on their farm and beyond.”
